This article explains that how to install VMware ESXi as a VM on VMware Workstation. It can help to try and learn ESXi without dedicated resources. Also, it is useful if you are doing VCP certification.
Prerequisites:
1. You should have VMware Workstation installed
2. Get the ESXi ISO from VMware Download Center
Create VM for ESXi:
1. Create New VM from toolbar in VMware Workstation
2. Click Next with Typical selection
3. Select downloaded ESXi ISO in “Installer disk image file (iso)” and click on Next button
4. Select “VMware ESX” and version on Guest OS wizard and Next
5. Give VM Name and select location where you want to keep VM files. (make sure you have enough space)
6. Specify Disk Capacity as you required, select Store Virtual disk and Next
7. You can customize VM hardware from this wizard or just click on Finish to complete VM creation
Install ESXi:
1. Power On VM
2. Once machine boots select installer as per screenshot and press Enter key. It will start to load ESXi installer files, once loading is completed installation get started.
3. Press Enter to start Installer
4. Press F11 to accept the license agreement and continue. Press ESC key if you are not agreed with the EULA terms. Installation process will get terminated as soon as ESC key is pressed.
5. Select the disk where you want to install ESXi. Here we have 10GB lock disk. Press Enter key to continue
6. Select keyboard layout of your choice and press Enter to continue
7. Enter password for user ‘root’ and press Enter
8. All the required configuration has done, now time to install ESXi on disk. Press F11 to confirm start the installation.
9. It may take few minutes for installation. once installation is completed need to reboot the machine. Before reboot, go to VM settings and uncheck ‘Connect at power on’ from CD drive so that after restart machine can boot from local disk. Once done Press Enter to reboot.
10. Once VM is up with running OS then this will appear. Where you can find the IP address of ESXi if you have DHCP in your infra. Also, you will get URLs to access host on Web Browser.
